What a year really costs
How you use the card matters far more than which fee you're charged. Here's the yearly cost at the lowest annual fee and a mid-range 29.88% APR.
What interest really costs
A fixed APR sounds abstract. Here's what it means each month if you carry a balance at 29.88%, near the middle of Yendo's range.
| Balance carried | Interest per month (approx.) | Interest per year if never paid down |
|---|---|---|
| $500 | $12.45 | about $149 |
| $1,000 | $24.90 | about $299 |
| $2,500 | $62.25 | about $747 |
| $5,000 | $124.50 | about $1,494 |

The true cost of a cash advance
Cash advances start charging interest the day you take them, on top of a 3% fee. At 29.88%, one month on $300 costs about $16.47, roughly 5.5% of the cash.
Is the annual fee worth it?
If you can put down $200 for a no-fee secured card, that's usually cheaper and puts no vehicle at risk. See alternatives.
If you can't spare a deposit, $40–$69 a year can be a fair price for a credit line that reports to all three bureaus. At 1.5% cash back, spending about $2,700–$4,600 a year earns the fee back.
Compared with a car title loan
The Federal Trade Commission notes title lenders often charge about 25% per month, roughly 300% APR. Both products use your car as collateral, but the cost difference is enormous.
